COFFEE HISTORY :.

Coffee was first grown at the end of 19th century from the land of Abyssinia which is presently known as Ethiopia.

Kenya is recognized for growing high quality of coffee.Arabica is an example of high quality coffee which is always bought at premium price due to excellent body, flavour, acidity and aroma.Kenya coffee is mostly grown on highlands of between 45,000-6,000 feet above sea level, mainly around Mt.Kenya region.

This region is right for growing cofee due to it’s red, rich volcanic soils of great deapth, fertility with good drainage. It also has a mild climate and well distributed rainfall, throughout the year varying between 40’to50’ per annum. Although other African countries produce coffee, Kenyan coffee is the finest of all.

After harvesting ,coffee undergoes a certain procedure i.e , famers deliver coffee to the millers where it is milled. The milled product is mechanically graded and classified. The following are main grades produced in Kenya:-AA,AB,PB,E,C these are the high grade and there are other low grades such as T,Ug1,Ug2 etcetera.

Apart from Arabica there is onother type of coffee known as MBUNI.The coffee is dried and milled then graded into two when the milling process is over. The grades are:-MBUNI HIGH(MH)and MBUNI LOW(ML).
